I was whipping along, getting all correct when I got a fatal message --- "Failed to connect to web server". Guess I'll try again later.

ps...got to 60 grains of rice before it locked up.

40 and 860 donated.

I think it helps to know some Shakespeare and older English too. Though knowing some latin roots does help.

Damn you wee. This is just the kinda distraction I can mess with and still convince myself it's of benefit to my writing! And it helps others!

I fifth(?) the Latin help. My husband was parroting "I KNOW you don't know that word." Then I would get it right, and smugly reply, "No, but I know the ROOT of that word." I have to admit though, some words I KNOW and I think that the choices are a little off from what I would have described as the meaning.

level is 44, donated 1040 grains of rice.

That was fun. I have so many useless words that I could never include in a novel.

I hit 50, but part of the reason is what I consider the weakness in the program--it groups unlike grammar parts together. So if the word by its construct is clearly a noun as opposed to a verb or adjective, you can pick the noun definition from the list, whether you actually know the meaning of the word. This worked for me several times, so that's kind of cheating.

Test Your Vocabulary Skills and Do Good, too

I'm totally absorbed in this game - my vocab skill level at this point goes back and forth between 46 and 47 out of 50 and the site says very few people get above 48. The fun for me is looking at an unfamiliar word and figuring out what it means - there are 4 choices and sometimes it's more a matter of making an educated guess but often I'm digging back to all that linguistics and other language education I received 30+ years ago to figure it out.

I've also donated 810 grains of rice so far (each word you get right is worth 10 grains) to the program:

Quote:
The rice is distributed by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). The World Food Program is the world’s largest food aid agency, working with over 1,000 other organizations in over 75 countries. In addition to providing food, the World Food Program helps hungry people to become self-reliant so that they escape hunger for good. Wherever possible, the World Food Program buys food locally to support local farmers and the local economy. We encourage you to visit the United Nations World Food Program to learn more about their successful approach to ending hunger.
More FAQs about the game.

Since the site is not asking me for $$, it's a really well done in terms of its graphical look and user interface, and the advertisement links that pay for the donations are small, subtle and major companies (TimeLife, Office Depot, Apple) I'm thinking this is a legit effort.

Have fun!

I can't stop playing this game! I can't get past 42, and then I bomb out and go back to 38, and so on and so forth. I don't want to say how many thousand grains of rice I've donated instead of, oh, let's say...writing my book. Heh.

There's already a meme going around Live Journal that asks you to play until you lose, and then write a drabble using the word that stumped you.

I got to 46. What's fun is not so much the vocab as it is trying to figure out the roots of unfamiliar words and then make an educated guess.

It's a learning tool ... right? You can use these words in your writing (if you can remember what they mean)

Quote:
FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level of vocabulary. It starts by giving you words at different levels of difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a word wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three words in a row right, you go to a harder level. This one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the “outer fringe” of your vocabulary, where learning can take place.

I'll try again, see how high I can get.

Great game, great cause.

I stopped at 500 grains of rice, and am horrified and slightly dubious of my 35 point score.

Anyone else run out to see the actual volume of 10 grains of rice? Ofcourse the real question is: do they average the weight, the volume, or actually have some poor smoe counting the grains for the donation.

I agree with this, but they're close enough for Hollywood, I guess.

I got up to 500 grains of rice, and a score of 42. Then I had to go cook dinner, and we're having rice tonight! Isn't that funny??

I have no idea how the vocab level works, as my one kept dropping. Have finished on vocab level 14 with 760 grains of rice. Was fun, whilst it lasted and I seemed to know what alot of the words meant by instinct, which was clever considering I had never heard of them before.
