Pedophilia terms and slang

I'm writing a novel about a homicide detective -- who was sexually abused as a child -- that is assigned to be the primary investigator on the murder of a pedophile.

I need to better understand the pedophilia "culture" (I use the word "culture" for lack of a better to describe the cancer on society) because it has to be explored in part. In particular, I was wondering if anybody knew of any websites or other resources that had lists of slang that pedophiles use and their definitions. I'm terrified of doing a search on the web myself, in case I come across anything disturbing.

Maybe I should start another thread about researching topics that make you want to vomit.

You may want to check:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/

http://www.sex-lexis.com/

Also remember that most pedophiles don't consider themselves as such, but instead prefer call themselves "Boylover" or "Girl-lover" creating themselves an illusion that they actually can have a romantic relationship with the kids

If you have enough guts and a good stomach you may want to check some forums; but is disgusting, like watching a White Supremasist Forum and this function freely because they don't show pornography but instead they talk about they "love" I think there is even a Boylover Wiki!

I started to write a pedorastic character, but at the end I dropped the idea after the disgust that I felt...

There's a documentray called "Chicken Hawk" that would probably be helpful.

Thanks so far.

I'm averse to checking out the forums, but will if it's going to be a last resort thing.

Thanks for the recommendation of the movie. Seems to be the kind of documentary I like too: let the subjects hang themselves rather than offer a lot of commentary. Unfortunately, the only video store in town with an obscure collection doesn't have it.

Just a question, Miguelito: If you're averse to doing the research because it might disturb you (and I definitely understand that), how do you plan to write this character?

Good luck, though -- I hope the writing does go well.

No Netflix? It really is a very good documentary.

Well, I'm not so concerned about the main character (simple abuse at the hands of her stepfather -- I can glean all sorts of information about long-term after effects from legitimate sources, such as alcohol and drug addiction, sexual dysfunction, etc...). But, the research would be about the community of pedophiles she has to explore in the murder investigation. And I'm not so averse to the research, I'm averse to what I might accidentally come across. I'm hoping that somebody has already done a profile on the community (what's the groupthink, how do they justify their actions, etc...). In the end, I can always go to their message boards, but I'd like to do it as a last resort. I'm getting the feeling that I'll have little recourse though.

Dolores Haze: no netflix and I'm not sure what the Canadian alternatives are. But it will be worth checking out, thanks.

I knew a pedophile. I'll PM you. I can tell you that he was tormented every single day by the thoughts in his head. It wasn't something that he enjoyed. Have you seen The Woodsman, with Kevin Bacon? He plays a pedophile. And there's also Little Children.

I once found myself checking out random chat groups (very, very bored and hoping to stumble into actual conversation, rather than the usual chat room crap), and saw one called "pertens". I had no idea what this meant.

Come to find out, it was slang for "preteens", (sort of like "pr0n" can mean "porn") and the people there were pedophiles. One can hope that they were only thinking about pedophilia, and roleplaying it with one another online, and not actually going out to the real world and acting on those impulses...but yuck. I got out of there real quick.

Another thing to consider: some people look at the 13 and up crowd these days and think that they look/act so grown up that surely they are the exception, they are mature, and so it isn't really pedophilia to go after them. My husband is a school teacher, and one year, at a rather poor, backwoods school, there were THREE teachers fired for having sexual relations with students. At another point, I submitted a story idea on a website-that-shall-not-named, and it involved a young teacher who taught high school and felt very maternal about her students. Two different people suggested that she, being young, should see her students as peers and be sexually attracted to them rather than feeling maternal towards them.

I pointed out that my husband was a young school teacher who felt paternal about his students and got treated as if I were just blind to his secret lust for children. Grrrr.

So, anyway, a lot of people who are attracted to children don't think of themselves as pedophiles. Nonetheless, they may join an online community of pedophiles, looking for people who won't judge them, and will understand that little 14-year-old Suzie really is grown up enough to be bedding. They'll probably talk about "love" and "serious relationships" and throw around the phrase "mature for his/her age" but not use the usual pedophile slang, cause, ya know, they aren't *real* pedophiles.

Shya right.

And to anyone who is offended by this and says, "Well, I'm 16, and if I'm with someone over 21 it's not pedophilia," or whatever, I'd say this: if it's love, it can wait a year or two before getting physical. If they can't wait, then what is it, exactly?

Keep in mind, when I was 15, my boyfriend was over 21. Let's just say that it wasn't love.

Thanks all.

I will watch those movies. I really would like to watch Chicken Hawk, but it isn't available on Canadian versions of Netflix.

I've already, briefly, looked at some of the forums, the most public ones. Thankfully, they're not lewd or have any pron, but still the topics are disturbing nonetheless. It's goddamn creepy. But it's a way that I can look at it without risking too much of my sense of dignity.

I had no idea that they used standard symbols to identify themselves (which, in hindsight, shouldn't be that surprising). For the parents on the board, here's a link to them (not a pedophile site).

That link is informative, but heartbreaking.

Creepy doesn't begin to describe it.

I'm glad that you posted it, but now I feel like I need a long, cool shower.

Something you might want to keep in mind, Miguelito, since I haven't seen it posted. Many agents have blogged on this subject when it comes up about writing this type of story and the possibility of getting it published.

Here's one:
http://misssnark.blogspot.com/2006/11/auto-no.html

and if you search her blog you'll find a lot of other references. Just keep in mind that, though not impossible, you are choosing a tough summit to climb with this type of story.

Thanks. It's already crossed my mind, but I hadn't seen it written down like that before.

I'm trying to do it tactfully (no abuse scenes; I don't want to push the envelope). It's about the internal conflict of the main character, how to investigate the murder of somebody that she'd rather let go uninvestigated. And it's about the eventual metaphorical conflict with her abuser. And, it's also about struggling with the demons she carries that manifest in alcoholism, problems developing relationships.

In a way, because of that complexity, the pedophile world won't have that much weight behind it (it's definitely not a novel primarily about pedophilia), but I thought that the plot device needed some legitimacy behind it, to understand how the community operates.

There are other things too that draw the story away from that theme as well, but I don't want to get into that (too much of a digression).
