Well I'm polishing up[ a new book that I hope agent person will like. If she doesn't, then I may just lie down and wait to be trampled by elephants cause ...yeah.
It would be one way to go.

I poked agent yesterday and am waiting to hear back. Mostly about edits for book 2, cause I really don't want to know whats going on with the book on sub. What if no one wants it! I went through 4 edits on that thing and if no one wants it I will cry.
Good news is I finally got past whatever was holding me back and a brand new idea formed yesterday and I wrote 10 handwritten pages (Which will translate to about 25 on the computer) All I care about is it's back! Phew! And I am super excite about the story and concept and hope to all that is good in the world agent man likes it too.

Congrats on getting back to writing! I personally love longhand, because it turns off my editorial urges.
Me, I'm getting my first taste of waiting on my agent. He left for vacation today. That's why he was so eager to call me before he left--he didn't want someone to "snap me up" while he was on vacation. Now I wait two weeks... |

Red, you are rejoicing at that, right: that you (in essence) are a pre-empt?

Well, I'm mostly giggling at it, because it's not like I felt particularly in danger of being "snapped up" having scored 40+ rejections on this book already. Not like Blond's agent cage match.

Red, I had at least 75 on the mystery. I lost my older QR file. And you know how fast The Agent made me an offer.

I queried mine with the first 5 pages, he got right back to me requesting exclusive on full, I wrote back that it was already out with 4 other agents, would he like to wait, and he emailed RIGHT back with a "I'll read this tonight. Please let me know if you get an offer so we can talk first." He offered 3 days later.

I said this in Purgatory already, but wanted to mention here, too, that my agent approved the revisions I made to my last manuscript and it will be on submission soon! Yay!

Thanks, guys!
I'm probably more anxious about this one because my agent tells me it's even better than the other one she started subbing 9 months ago. And because there's been so much interest in steampunk lately, I might be hitting it at just the right time. I have a good feeling about this one, but I said that about my other one, too. Circle of Hell couldn't be more apt.

Well done, all, and good luck.
How do I apply for my Normal Joe card? I want to be one of these happy bastards that goes home on the weekend, watches TV and eats BBQ. They don't have to spend lonely days and nights querying and cold calling and getting dead silence in return. I'm sick of pretending I ever had a shot at being a filmmaker, and I'm sick of being laughed at and treated like a pile of dirty laundry for trying. I want out. So what now? How do I do that?

*hands mario chocolate and red wine*
mario, are you a salesman in your Day Job (to pay the rent and eat regularly)? Or are you cold calling to try and get someone to read your scripts? *hands more wine and chocolate at the very thought* I say keep querying till you're dead, because that's my own philosophy. I do have a day job to pay the bills, though. If you really need a break, then--take one. Do the Average Joe thing for awhile. If that's how you'll be happy, then you'll know it. But if you can't sleep because you Gotta Make That Film, then you'll be happier knowing it. Good luck! |

Calla, I'm looking for work as a script reader (among other things) and I live in NYC area so I'm calling the West Coast when I can. I wish I could phone pitch like that, and who knows soon I may have to, but I do send eMail queries.
What's frustrating is, I know it's going to fail, but I couldn't live with myself if I didn't at least try. I just want a better job than the one I have, and I live in fear that that's not going to happen either. And that idea is worse than failing as an artist. Anyway, thank you for the wine and chocolate and for putting up with my moaning. I appreciate it.

oh mario I am right there with you, baby. I have no words of advice or wisdom, but thanks for making me feel less alone.
Lately I've come up with a new life philosophy: f*ck success. I've spent seven years trying to play the game, give people something just new enough to be exciting, just familiar enough to be marketable, and it's gotten me squat -- two agents, two and a half manuscripts, and a truckload of "well this is nice, but..." And I finally realized, the artists (writers, musicians, filmmakers, whatever) I respect and admire never set out to produce something safe and marketable. They worried about their art first, and at first, they may only have been appreciated by a handful of friends and hardcore fans. And even today, they might not be best sellers, but they have a loyal following who appreciates the truly meaningful work they do. And I figure -- that's good enough for me. so f*ck success.
