It's All in the Mind By Nayna Chakrabarty
"Oh! You finally made it. Didn't think you would."
"I know I haven't kept my word. But I have been meaning to keep in touch."
"Really! I don't believe you. I thought you lost interest in me."
"In you? You really think I can do that? I will never give up on you."
"You have faced so many rejections so I was uncertain if you would try again. I did cross my fingers but after a while they got sore."
"I am sorry. Trust me, you were at the back of my mind constantly. I admit that I was neglecting you but I didn't have anything to offer."
"Nonsense. You are so creative. Why do you doubt yourself? I have faith in you."
"I know, Sweetheart, that's why I can never abandon you or embrace anybody else. You are so committed to see that I succeed."
"Now will you promise to be regular?"
"I sincerely do. I will come and see you everyday."
"Just see me?"
"No, I will make sure I leave a mark on you. I know you will like that."
"Oh! That sounds romantic."
"Actually I was thinking more in terms of a thriller."
"Tell me more..."
My notebook and I talk daily. It's the best way to keep me going. People often don't understand the writer. Many of us have our moods, frustrations, and the drive to achieve it all. But somehow it gets misinterpreted. The spiral notepad sits on my table awaiting my touch. Its smooth pages make sure that my thoughts flow and my fingers are stress-free. What more can a writer ask for? Someone eagerly waiting to hear your wildest plots, and at times, even half-baked ideas find solace.
Maybe it's time we all should find a friend in our pens, notebooks, and computers. It is they who help us to become what we are and showcase it to the world. If we give life to these objects, I am sure our uncertainty, laziness, lack of confidence will cease to exist. Are you wondering how this is possible?
Well, according to me, my notebook is my girlfriend. Would you keep your lady love waiting for days? I am sure you won't. You will be on time, make sure you spend quality time with her. So you will write something worthwhile for the day. Then come back again to keep the dinner date. You can sneak in on her anytime to see what she has been up to. In this way you are editing, revising, and seeing the article through. If you are going to be this sincere, can you imagine the amount of work you will accomplish? Your passion for writing will increase ten times because all you are focused on is pleasing her. You want to fill up the pages so that she can read and be a part of your excitement. The closeness, fondness grows each day and you will never face a writer's block again. That will be history in the making if we could seriously solve that hurdle from our lives. No one has to know that you are giving life to an inanimate object like a writing pad and calling it your girlfriend-- Diane.
You can wrap Diane in delightful gift wrapping paper, adorn her with stickers of hearts and kisses or write on her with scented glitter pens. She will be no different from a real girl and the best part is that you don't have to take her shopping, fancy dinners or to the movies. She only wants you to come to her and to do your thing. That's amazing!
If this works for you then I have been successful in creating a lunatic just like me. Otherwise there are always books by experts on motivation, writing skills, inspiration stories from writers who made it big and how to write the best-selling novel. These are the best sources to boost our confidence and sharpen our skills. But there are days when the information provided sounds arduous and unattainable. The mind is clouded with ambiguity and self-doubt, triggered furthermore by the arrival of the rejection letters. Questions like "Am I real writer? Will I ever succeed?" haunt our daydreams and add a variety to our nightmares. Finding new ways to bring out creativity helps us explore our minds better and makes our thinking refined. I believe firmly in this following line from a Hindu religious text, the Bhagvat Gita: "Mind is the cause of bondage; mind is the cause of freedom."
Rest assured that even if you do find a friend in your notepad then you are not the only weird one. There are many of us out there who don't like sharing our notebooks with anyone and now you know the reason why.
