Freelancing Forecast 2007*

By Brandy Stoner

CAPRICORN

Maybe your "niche" is code for "rut." Take chances and drop outdated projects. That anthological tribute to the heroes of 9/11 has passed.

AQUARIUS

Like Capricorn, you should try something new. Being an air sign doesn't mean your head is in the clouds, and impatience with slow learners means you are better self-taught than in a classroom or workshop. If you're in publishing, be more sensitive. Please. We're not all as sharp as you.

PISCES

Suffering for art is a figure of speech. Turn on the lights and take off the long black sweater. You are artistic and intelligent, and everyone knows that. You don't have to project "cerebral" to prove it.

ARIES

See the sponge? BE the sponge. It retains its shape while absorbing and expanding. Enroll in a writing workshop or visit an artists' colony. While it is great that you are so passionate about your projects, Aries is usually synonymous with Narcissus. Don't be so in love with your ideas and projects that you can't hear advice.

TAURUS

You played with blocks a lot, didn't you? Taureans give solid form to their ideas, with a focus on structure. Indulge in your carnal urges and document it for posterity and prosperity. This will be a productive and therefore busy year for you. Don't let frustration get the best of you, and remember, "rejected" is not your name.

GEMINI

Pace your stories better than you pace yourself. Take some down time! At the end of your sabbatical, work on managing your time and space. Unearth unfinished projects from the previous disarray.

CANCER

This year, focus on your goals in order to give form to your fantasies, whether they involve unicorns, serial killers, or demonic forces. In your case, it may be all three. (Maybe collaborate with a Taurean?) You have incredible determination once you start. Your persuasive powers rival that of Angelina Jolie's-- it's time to assemble a project proposal.

LEO

Establish yourself as an authority by specializing. While generalizing allows you to build up clips, the lion's share (pun intended) of accepted queries are by writers with writing experience relevant to the publication.

VIRGO

Let go of any projects, contacts, or contracts that aren't bearing fruit. They leech you of energy, money, and time. You struggle to keep work and home life separate. Remedy this by setting up an efficient writing/work space.

LIBRA

Don't procrastinate. Be more forgiving of your mistakes and those of others, unless you're proofreading… Don't sway to others so much. Don't get sidetracked. Don't over-promise and then under-deliver.

SCORPIO

Drop the self-pity. Don't let rejection or criticism overwhelm you or make you cynical. Aim high anyway. You're a Scorpio-- a pedestal is where you belong.

SAGITTARIUS

Beware condescension-- you are not "above" your readers. Don't embellish or exaggerate. If you feel a need to manipulate the emotions of others, now is the time to work on character development… for your novel, silly…
