Late-Breaking News By Marilyn Haight
We're the first on the scene here in Peoria this morning, where a woman is reported to be writing a poem-- yes, yes, we see through her window, through partially-parted vertical blinds; she's sitting at her computer, elbows resting on the arms of an ergonomically correct chair in fine form-- back straight, fingers hovering above the keyboard. Hold on, we could see some action any time now, yes, folks, this event is about to unfold, and we're here to capture it for you-- live-- as she types the first word onto the screen and… here it comes! Will it be the title or does she start with the verse? It's… it's… the title! There you have it, the Peoria poet starts with the title! And now we see a burst of energy, like barnyard chickens pecking at kernels-- yes, we see the white screen turning grey now, wait… she stops, what's that she's doing? It looks like she's going to the Internet, yes there's the Google screen, she's clicking on her links now, clicking on "Dictionary"! Yes, she's gone to an online dictionary folks-- and you thought poets already knew the words they use! Well, look at that… she gets her words from the same word bank we all do. Wait. What's coming next? Will it be a metaphor? Simile? She stares at the screen… no… not the screen; her eyes drift up, left, she's still now, we see the tension mounting as her fingers tremble over the keys, and… a burst of pecking strikes at the keyboard! She stops. Her eyes move like a carriage- return. What's this? She's taking words from one line, moving them into the next, upper lines to lower, lower to upper, it looks like, like she's… she's weaving her words! This is how it's done, folks, and we're bringing it to you live! She's inserting new words, look! Look! The screen is turning grey again, the white margins pop, we fall onto a new page, but… wait… she's… going back… back to page one… she's changing the margins, reducing the font size-- putting it all on one page, look at this, folks, she moves like… Liberace… like Stevie Wonder… like Secretariat… like a lightning bolt! Like Moses' tablets, her final, two-line, poignant passage blazes onto the screen-- as if it's just a single keystroke and… she's done! We'll keep you posted as more news happens.
