Finding the Bacon
By Meg Weaver
Hi everybody,
Our theme today seems to be brides seeing all the bridal magazines Ginny
McCracken, who picks the magazines for this column, sent over to me. Is
she telling me something?
But I have something else on my mind: Closing January. You know, business
accounting departments close their books every month, making sure they are
balanced. Writers should do the same thing.
If you made New Year’s resolutions for your writing, now is the time to check
your progress. How many queries did you really send out? Did you
finish creating that portfolio? Is your website finally up?
You’ve heard this before: If you divide up your New Year’s goals into twelve
monthly mini-goals, your progress is going to be so much easier. But you
have to keep checking that you have actually achieved the monthly plan and
make one for next month.
“Closing the books” shouldn’t be only for accountants.

Air Mail Markets
By Amy Brozio-Andrews
Hello again and welcome to the latest issue of Air Mail Markets.
As the days fall back into their usual routine after the holidays of December and January, there are so many less distractions from writing. Fiction and nonfiction writers are encouraged, along with poets and essayists, to submit to Nova Scotia's Antigonish Review and Toronto's Descant, both well known for encouraging new writers. Descant is one of the few markets that also considers plays and novel excerpts. Canadian writers feeling altruistic in sharing their wisdom about the world of writing are invited to query Canadian Writer's Journal. The magazine accepts queries worldwide, but their mission and Canadian postal subsidies require significant Canadian content. So if you have a great story in your last sale, send it to Canadian Writer's Journal for consideration. The magazine is a valuable resource for both aspiring and established writers.
Bonne chance!
