Finding the Bacon
By Meg Weaver
Hello everybody,
Today's selection of magazines by our researcher Ginny McCracken, seems to be
inspired by a trip she recently took. On the other hand, I've never known
Ginny not to travel, so maybe I'm wrong. Nevertheless, she's included
local and regional publications this time. And since she always throws me
a curve, there's a trout fishing title in here, too.
Local and regional publications are wonderful markets. But, study the
editorial concept carefully to see whether the magazine is written for the
residents or for visitors - or for both.
Either way, you need to approach any subject from a new angle but if the
magazine is intended for visitors, you must weave in the background and history
so they can grasp the fascination for the place or the person you're writing
about. However, make sure you don't bore the long-time resident.
How do make sure that you don't loose the resident? Read your story - or
query - over the phone to someone, who lives in the area. If you don't
know someone, call the visitors' bureau, chamber of commerce or tourist
association. Explain that you're writing an article about their town (or
county or state...). Ask for a minute of their time and you'll probably get it;
after all, it's their job to help promote the area. Then, read what you
have and ask for their honest feedback.
A great way to be sure you're on target with a magazine's readers.

Air Mail Markets
By Amy Brozio-Andrews
Hello again and welcome to the latest issue of Air Mail Markets.
This week's markets offer you your chance to break into publications centered on Canada's hobbies, home and history. Each of these magazine has a pretty tight Canadian focus, so non-Canadian writers will have to work extra hard to make sure their pitches will resonate with Canadian readers. If you feel like sharing your favorite fishing hole, British Columbia's Island Fisherman is geared to Canadian anglers. If home renovation is more your style, Canadian Homes & Cottages is seeking articles on "outstanding" home renovations, specifically kitchens and bathrooms. And for the history buffs, the official publication of Canada's National History Society seeks submissions on all aspects of Canadian history.
Bonne chance!

Promoting Your Prose
By Mary Emma Allen
CREATING A MEMORABLE PERSONALITY
Do you recede into the background when people meet you or do you present a
memorable appearance? We're told it takes 30 seconds to make a first impression.
How do you want to be perceived as an author?
This often is something we writers don't think about. As writers who strive for
recognition, we often never think of what could set us apart from others or what
might set writers we admire apart, in addition to their writing.
