Finding the Bacon
By Meg Weaver
Hello everybody,
Our magazine-picker, researcher Ginny McCracken, must have been very patriotic
when she selected the magazines for today's column: AMERICA, AMERICAN GIRL - she
even threw in the apple pie with APPLESEED'S. And obviously, you can fit
blues music into the American theme, but ARCHAEOLOGY'S DIG...?
However, this gives me an opportunity to once again get up on my virtual soap
box and nag all of you about reading - and understanding - a magazine's
editorial concept.
For example, AMERICA is not a publication about the country, nor is it a travel
magazine. It's weekly magazine published by Jesuits, which is not obvious
when you read no further than the title. There may be many well-paying
jewels out there, if we just check them out in depth.
Also, you need to know how a magazine is different from similar publications.
BLUES REVIEW is very emphatic about covering the "full spectrum" of
the music, "from country/acoustic to traditional to blues-rock, gospel and
zydeco."
Say a zydeco-playing legendary musician moved in next door and you sold a
profile of him to a local magazine. Then reslant the story for BLUES
REVIEW and query. You may just be lucky and sell it, but it wouldn't have
happened if you didn't know that a blues-magazine covered zydeco.
Hmm, perhaps I should haul out that story I sold on my next-door neighbor, who
had drummed with Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller, and find an appropriate music
magazine...
So, start making money from old reslanted stories by making it a daily habit to
read editorial concepts.

Air Mail Markets
By Amy Brozio-Andrews
Hello again and welcome to the latest issue of Air Mail Markets. This week's markets are playing payment and rights information close to the vest (with the exception of Australia's Andromeda Spaceways magazine - paying quite nicely for fiction, actually). If anyone has worked with either of these magazines and would like to share details with your fellow freelancers, please feel free to drop me a line and I would be happy to include your comments in an upcoming issue.
Queensland Brides and Sportdiving magazines may be tough markets for freelancers to crack. Both of these Australian publications would like to see high quality photos accompanying text. So if you know of any professional shutterbugs, consider collaborating.
Bonne chance!
