Finding the Bacon
By
Meg Weaver

Hello everybody,

Here are some magazines you don’t often see in market listings and they do run the gamut: Fro the bi-weekly political American Prospect to the pot culture High Times.

The last three publications exemplify how difficult it can be to interpret the writer’s rights that magazines purchase.  We have “sound-alikes” First North American Rights, First Serial Rights and First North American Serial Rights.

The easiest way to decipher the meaning is to realize that there is a geographical component, a publication component and a time component in rights statements.  Like this:

Geographical: “First North American,” usually meant to include the US and Canada.

Publication: “Serial,” which means a magazine or journal that is published on a repetitive basis.

Time: “First,” i.e. the same as “one-time” rights but the publisher is buying the rights to publish first.

So, the ubiquitous “First North American Serial Rights” means that the publication is buying the right to publish first in magazines distributed in the US and/or Canada.

Hope that helps a little.

Air Mail Markets
By Amy Brozio-Andrews

Hello again and welcome to the latest issue of Air Mail Markets.

Grain, a well-known Canadian literary magazine, welcomes submissions from unpublished writers.
