Finding The Bacon
By Kimberly Ripley

Our world and our nation have sought hope in a variety of ways for centuries—even more so since the 9/11 tragedies befell America. Many publications offer hope through inspiration, religious interpretation, and undying optimism. Often faulted for being overtly upbeat, such publications seek many freelance articles and short stories to enhance their positive outlook. What follows is but a handful of what has become a booming market.

While Catholic Digest is written to address the needs of Catholic families, there are articles of interest for people from all denominations. There are many useful parenting and family-type nonfiction pieces.

A great way to break into the publication is with a short piece for “Earning Their Wings”—tales of good deeds and “Only Human?”—where the main character in angelic perspective may or may not be human.

Pays: Upon publication. Full length manuscripts pay $100-$400. Short features and fillers pay $50-$100.

Contests Corner
By Moira Richards

"Hi!" from the Southern tip of Africa, where winter has begun to remind us that we're not *that* far from the Antarctic. Writing contests abound this month, and I've a bumper column of calls for entries as quoted on a dozen different websites. These contests are looking for writing on subjects ranging from American democracy through erotica, friendship, and God, all the way to the outright zany. If you don't actually get to enter a contest, it is still a useful learning experience to return to the sites later, to read the winning entries. Cheers, Moira.

Pockets® magazine 13th annual fiction-writing contest for freelance writers

"The purpose of Pockets® is to open up the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to children. It is written and produced for children and designed to help children pray and be in relationship to God. The magazine emphasizes that we are loved by God and that God's grace calls us into community. It is through the community of God's people that we experience that love in our daily lives.

"Pockets® is ecumenical, and our readers include persons of many cultures and ethnic backgrounds. These differences should be reflected in the references that are made to lifestyles, living environments (suburban, urban, rural, reservation), families (extended families, single-parent homes), and individual names. Stories should show appreciation of cultural differences and not leave the impression that one way is better than another.

"Stories should contain lots of action, use believable dialogue, be simply written, and be relevant to the problems faced by this age group in everyday life. Children need to be able to see themselves in the pages of the magazine. It is important that the tone not be "preachy" or didactic. Use short sentences and paragraphs. When possible, use concrete words instead of abstractions. However, do not "write down" to children."

PRIZE: $1000

ENTRY FEE: None

An Orgasmic Writing Contest! FROM TANTRA.COM

"We’re holding a writing contest that will lead to an eventual anthology of educational/erotic stories about orgasm. Please join us and submit what you’ve been longing to share with others! READ ON…

"Most of us are fortunate to experience living in a fairly sex-positive culture. As you know, this is not so common in many other parts of the world. Many of us have had the good fortune to participate in women's circles where we've shared intimate stories, questions, concerns and joys regarding all nature of our sexual beings. We've talked about menstruation, our loss of virginity stories, orgasm, rites of passage for our children into burgeoning sexuality, masturbation, polyamory and on and on.

"We’d like a 2 page-long (about 1,000 words), fun, juicy read that would also offer personal tips and be 'instructional' but has an erotic, sensual feel. We know there are many different types of orgasms. Perhaps you might write about your favorite way to come or an experience that transformed the way you orgasm. We are not looking for one's most extraordinary orgasm but rather ones that are repeatable or a story of an experience that held key factors in giving you access to a new sexual doorway.

"Let this subject stir in you, coaxing the words to your experience that will help other women explore the path of their own orgasmic experience. Give your story an erotic appeal with tips, tid-bits and contributions that will empower and connect the reader with her own personal stories and knowledge."

PRIZE: $100

ENTRY FEE: None

DEADLINE: July 31, 2002

It will give you a focus and a place to start writing.
Writing to a set word count will help you tighten your writing.

You might also win a cash prize and that’s always a nice bonus.

Have you changed your writing? Do you spend more time with your family? Did you lose your job? Is your faith stronger? If September 11 inspired you to you make writing or personal goals, where are you today? A year from now where would you like to be, how do you plan on getting there? Tell us in 800 words or less about how September 11, 2001 inspired you to you make writing or personal goals in your life. Each entry must include two quotes in the body of the piece. I have been an accountant for a very long time, but I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. I realised a year or so back that there's not that many decades left for me get grown up, and so I'm working part time at learning how to be a writer. Besides my  column here, I write a weekly article on Women Abuse for  Suite101.com - not a pretty subject, but if you have the stomach,  check it out at http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/women_abuse -  and have recently been promoted by them to Managing Editor (Food).
