Finding The Bacon
By Meg Weaver

Hi all,

Times are tough for magazines today.  The largest source of income, advertising, is way down and many well-known magazines are folding, like MADEMOISELLE, ZIFF DAVIS SMART BUSINESS (formerly PC COMPUTING) and 112-year old SPORTS AFIELD.

But the one glimmer of hope has been, and still is, the local and regional magazines.  Their ad pages and revenue is either flat or down a much smaller percent that the average publication’s.

But don’t expect all regional magazines to be the same – or want the same stories.  Read their writer’s guidelines and the editorial concept carefully.  Just look at what the following publications want: NEW MEXICO wants stories about “the uniqueness of New Mexico's people”; NEW YORK is a general lifestyle pub and NORTH GEORGIA JOURNAL wants “historic facts, genealogy and captivating historic feature stories.”

If the magazine doesn’t outright tell you what it wants, you can find it elsewhere if you look carefully.  For example, NEVADA’s interest can be found in its description (usually called the editorial concept): It’s the state’s official tourism and travel publication.  As such, they’re not going to be interested in hard-hitting journalism or personal essays, but glowing descriptions of its natural and commercial wonders.

Regional pubs can be great markets but do your research so you can query with a winning idea.

Writer's Legal Corner

The Author-Agency Agreement

For many writers the first milestone to publication is the holy Finding of The Agent.  Agents have become the screeners and gatekeepers for major publishing houses, and receiving an offer of representation from an agent is certainly cause for celebration.  At that magical time, you will be presented with your agent’s “standard” agreement for signature.

The first step in evaluating the agreement ¾ if you haven’t already done so ¾ is to make sure the agent is reputable.
