Finding The Bacon
By Meg Weaver

Here in the U.S. we’ve just celebrated Memorial Day, which unofficially means the start of summer, which in turn brings to mind vacations and travel.  Maybe that’s why we have another batch of local and regional magazines.

These are fun magazines to write for, even though they may not be well-paying.  But for new writers they can provide a steady stream of jobs where you can get a few checks and, more important, put together a portfolio of “published clips,” without which you can’t get into the larger magazines.

Just don’t assume that all local and regional magazines are the same.  Look at ONTARIO OUT OF DOORS, for example.  Its title may indicate a larger sphere of interest but if you read the carefully, you’ll see that it covers only fishing and hunting, not any other outdoor activities.

So, how do you find out what the magazines want?  Since they’re...well, regional, they may not be available for study everywhere.  But, most of the time they will have a website, so check the Internet before you query.  Read the articles and the “About Us” page.  Even click on the subscription page and read the blurb describing the magazine.

But don’t stop there.  Click on “Advertising” and read everything you can find.  You’ll be surprised at how much you can learn about the magazine’s purpose and its readers.  The information, of course, is intended for prospective advertisers but it’s highly useful for writers as well.

Raising Royalties
By Rusty Fischer

SLICING UP MORE PROFITS (BY CUTTING UP YOUR E-BOOK!)

The Author of BEYOND THE BOOKSTORE Reveals How to Sell Your eBook—by Chopping it Up!

While promoting your eBook may seem like a daunting task, the following marketing tip is one option that was put into place the moment you finished writing the book!

BE A LUMBERJACK!

Let's say you've writing an eBook on gardening. Let's say you named your eBook "Gardening for Goofballs!" Let's say your eBook, Gardening for Goofballs, is 50,000 instructive words designed specifically to draw out the green thumb in all of us. How do you promote it? Sure, you can throw up a Website, pay for advertising in a hundred different gardening newsletters, or put up a billboard on I-95! Or, you could simply revisit your manuscript and begin--chopping it up!

First things first. Take out that contract you signed with your ePublisher and read it carefully. Somewhere buried within the percentage of royalties you'll receive on CD sales and the length of the contract, you will find a stipulation allowing you to post up to a certain amount of the book on the Web for promotional purposes. I've worked with several ePublishers by now, and this is pretty standard fare. My current contract says I can post up to 30% of the manuscript for promotional purposes.
