Finding the Bacon
By Kimberly Ripley

Greetings, avid freelancers, and welcome to this issue of Finding the Bacon. This week’s column looks at markets for anthologies. There are numerous anthologies seeking writers, and even though the pay isn’t always significant, these markets are an excellent way to open doors for more writing opportunities. Some anthologies are impressive name-droppers for resumes, too. “I was published in Chicken Soup for the Soul” sounds impressive to writers and non-writers alike. Take a look at these options and search your heart and soul for touching tales, tearjerkers, and timeless twists of fate.

Chicken Soup for the Soul is probably the most widely-known series of anthologies, featuring well-known and new authors. Chicken Soup stories are between 300 and 1200 words long and must be true.

BUT IT’S NOT A BOOKSTORE! Part III

The Author of BEYOND THE BOOKSTORE Reveals Five (Other) Places to Sell Your Self-Published Book

Now that we’ve learned a little more about promoting your self-published book, here are 5 more alternate retail outlets where you can start selling it:

WEAVE A WEB (SITE)!

Remember, just because you’ve self-published a print book, that doesn’t mean you can’t offer it for sale on the Web. Many companies offer Web hosting for FREE, and with the simple templates they provide you can have your very own “store” in cyberspace after a single weekend. Search for “free Websites” or “free Webmalls,” etc. and you are bound to find more sites offering these services than you can shake a cyberstick at.
