Finding the Bacon Hi everybody, In the United States there are two
three-day holidays that have come to mark the beginning of summer and its end.
After Memorial Day we allow ourselves to slow down in the hot weather but
once past Labor Day we pick up the pace. Kids
head to school and writers hit the keyboards.
That’s the good part. The bad part is that we often keep
typing without any thought to where we’re heading.
We see an interesting market and lurch off to research, write and submit. Wouldn’t it be a better use of our
time if we did a little planning? For example, look at the golf
magazines below. If I were a golf
writer (I am not, as will become obvious...) I could find a way to get the
attention of all the five editors by interviewing a Canadian female pro golfer,
who is playing in a tournament in California, Nevada, Utah or Arizona. Okay, I agree that it’s a little bit of a stretch but the
point is serious: every time you research a story for one magazine, consider
what other magazines you can query with similar material.
Especially when your research includes time-consuming efforts such as
interviews or traveling. But how do you find these other
magazines? It’s easy.
You can actually let your original magazine tell you by checking out its
list of competitive magazines. This
is often found in their “Media Kit” (often available on their website) or
check media directories that list competitors, like my own Wooden Horse
Magazines Database at http://www.woodenhorsepub.com.
So, before you set out on your trip
to “California, Nevada, Utah or Arizona” to interview that Canadian golfer,
plan your questions: For GOLF
CANADA you can ask about her favorite amateur-level courses at home in Canada;
for GOLF FOR WOMEN get her to talk about the status of women’s golf today; for
GOLF ILLUSTRATED get tips on technique – and be sure to shoot some great
photos; for GOLF MAGAZINE get her to talk about the pro tour; and for GOLF TODAY
ask her about special tips for playing western US courses... All right, you can think up better
questions, but I hope you get the point. Use
one interview to get material to query five different magazines. GOLF CANADA Phone: (905) 849-9700 Website: http://www.rcga.org
