Finding the Bacon
By Meg Weaver

Dear fellow writers,

Our selection of magazines this time features publications about things you can do outside: You can stargaze (SKY & TELESCOPE), float on the waves (GO BOATING), travel to exotic locales (HAWAII), save endangered animals (WILDLIFE CONSERVATION) or hunt those not so endangered (TURKEY & TURKEY HUNTING.)

Even though these titles all deal with the outdoors, a writer can easily discern their differing themes.  However, when we narrow the focus, it gets a little more challenging.  For example, does SKY & TELESCOPE want different stories from what ASTRONOMY magazine wants?  What's the editorial difference between GO BOATING and BOATING LIFE?

Not knowing the editorial concept is the most common mistake writers make. Editors implore us to "read the magazine" because they get so many queries that just don't fit the publication.

Actually, you don't need to read the magazine to get a good idea what a magazine is about.  Their marketing people have already helped us out. They've encapsulated the editorial thrust and posted it on the subscription page on their website.  Yes, the subscription page!  That's where they try to snag subscribers - in just a few seconds.  And it's a great help for writers who are looking for a fast "Yes, I'm interested/No, I'm not" answer.  Take a look next time you're online.

That quick check will, of course, not give you the whole story.  But it's a good place to start your research.

Air Mail Markets
By Amy Brozio-Andrews

Hello again and welcome to the latest issue of Air Mail Markets! Quite a diverse listing this week; Verbatim: The Language Quarterly is geared toward the linguist in all of us. If you’ve a knack for words (and I know you’re all writers, so I’m hoping you do!), Verbatim is the market for you. For activist-writers, Capital Xtra is a leading monthly published in Canada’s capital region by and for the gay and lesbian community. And lastly, there’s Scoop – a tough market to get into, but if you’re a great writer, you could be writing one of the few freelance articles this Australian market publishes each month.

By the way, Erin McKean, the editor of Verbatim: The Language Quarterly, stressed that professional writers put their last name on every page of a manuscript, with complete contact information on the first page. I imagine she’d probably not the only editor to look at piles of submissions and wonder who sent what, so I’m passing this advice on, hoping it will increase your chances of getting published!

Bonne chance!

Your Book Stinks, Or Dealing With Bad Reviews
By Rusty Fischer

The Author of BEYOND THE BOOKSTORE Reveals How to Make the Best of a BAD Review

Well, it finally happened. After three or four cushy reviews by freelancing friends and chummy editors, I got my first bad review. Okay, so it wasn’t bad. After all, at the end, the reviewer did give the book 4 out of 5 stars and said, I quote, “for the price, this book of tips can’t be beat!” Still, it left me feeling like the redheaded stepchild sitting on the bench at a junior high dance.
