Remembering Carmel
Thomaston This week, the writing community mourns the loss of Carmel Parsons Thomaston, who passed away on December 2, 2002. Many of us knew her as the founder and editor of Painted Rock and the free online magazine for writers, The Rock. Carmel wrote under the pen name Fay Robinson, penning several novels for Harlequin. Her books include Courage, My Love, Christmas on Snowbird Mountain, The Notorious Mrs. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Wrong, Coming Home to You, and A Man Like Mac. She was a two-time Rita winner and a Maggie award winner. She was a former newspaper editor and freelance writer from Alabama who wrote for magazines like Writer's Digest and Progressive Farmer. She touched many writers' and readers' lives, and our hearts go out to her family. Her obituary is here. Notes from Readers: ------------- I too "knew" Carmel Thomaston as
the founder and editor of Painted Rock Writers' Colony, The Rock magazine and
the Prock Research List. I happened upon Painted Rock in the mid-90s--at a
dark time in my life, too--when the authors' message postings and group support
boards, along with the site's lovely graphic designs, were a real online haven
for me. I have long admired Carmel with a touch of wonder that she
accomplished such a nourishing online source where writers could gather.
(It was a feat of organization to keep all that stuff straight!) Her e-mail
research list was awesome. ------------- I feel the world will have an empty space where she used to be. Heaven has a new star. ------------- Sorry to hear about Fay Robinson's death. She wrote a great newsletter, which will be sadly missed. My sympathies to Fay's family. Laurel Lamperd ------------- I was so sad to hear of Carmel's death. Such talent! ------------- I am so sorry to hear of Carmel's passing. I discovered her outstanding "Rock" about 3 years ago while working here in Cleveland and have come to look forward to it each week. I was just now purging my e-mail and was reminded that I haven't rec'd the Rock for several weeks. Now I know why. My sincere condolences to her family and friends. I, too, lost a very dear friend to cancer just 5 weeks ago. So sad for friends and acquaintances so young. My friend, Ann, was only 52 years of old, just 5 years my junior...scary. Tricia Feeney ------------- I was saddened to finally discover why I haven't been receiving my "research digest" from Carmel. We travel a lot and I thought I had accidentally gotten taken off the list. Please send my condolences to Carmel's family. Her work in undertaking the 'research digest' and "The Rock" meant so much to those of us who aren't connect to other writers except through the internet. Sincerely, Karen Johnson ------------- If you'd like to add your memories or messages for Carmel's family to this page, please e-mail them to me at jenna@absolutewrite.com.
