Inside
the Cover Book Reviews Bylines 2005 Writer's Desk Calendar I
approached this review assignment with a small modicum of trepidation. What
would I find enough of in a desk calendar to warrant writing a full review? By
its nature, a calendar is mostly open spaces for its owner to use as she wishes,
and of all the users of a calendar, I know that a writer would be the least
inclined to let someone complete them for her! But
my misgivings were entirely unfounded. First, Bylines 2005 Writer's Desk
Calendar exudes class from the sturdy spiral that binds it, beneath the
beautifully composed cover photograph, to the smooth quality of the pages
comprising it. Seven days per page creates just enough enticement to the writer
to fill the blanks with her own words-- no dauntingly vast empty spaces stare
back at her here. And the binding allows the book to fall open easily at any
page, inviting use. The
writer owner of one of these desk calendars may find herself on occasion, at a
loss for ideas or low in motivation, alone and in need of communing with others
of her kind. And here the true value of this little book emerges-- a brief
personal anecdote from one of its fifty-odd contributors faces each week's empty
page. Some stories reflect on the challenges of the writing life, others on the
compulsion that drives a writer. One fellow writer may share a publishing
triumph, another a lesson she learned the hard way. Every contribution includes
a snapshot of its author and they all reassuringly, resemble ordinary people
just like you and me. This book by writers, for writers, comes complete with lists of recommended books on the craft of writing, others of information resources on the Web, and the name, each day, of a well-known writer born on that date. Its publication history testifies too, to the tenacity of writers, but I will leave that story for you to discover yourself. Read this book as I did, from cover to cover in one sitting, and then return to it often for a dose of writerly chocolate, and if you think that your own story would motivate as much as those in the 2005 calendar, why don't you submit it to the publisher for consideration for the 2006 edition?
