It's hard to get good, practical advice about the freelance writing business.
Most books tell the writer to show, don't tell; write what you know; nail the
query letter; and complete all remaining highly-advised goals on the writer's
checklist. This advice is true and often needs to be said, but it only scratches
the surface. Both novice and seasoned writers who dive head first into a
freelance writing career are suddenly bombarded with questions they need answers
to. How can I have a successful-- not mediocre-- freelance writing career? How
do I make the transition from a corporate job to writing career? How do I file
taxes with the IRS for all my writing jobs, and what things can I write off? Some
even find they need step by step tips. All of these questions and more are
answered in David Trottier's The Freelance Writer's Bible: Your Guide to a
Profitable Writing Career Within One Year.
The Freelance Writer's Bible is separated into four books. Each book
tackles a different stage the writer goes through when beginning to build a
freelance writing career. Novices who love to write but haven't gotten past the
fact that writing is a profitable career that is within their reach can tackle
their demons in book one. Book two is written for those writers who spend their
time mowing lawns, cleaning the house, and doing everything but writing. The words
"writer's block" will be a distant memory after reading this chapter. Book three
shows the writer, step by step, how to build a freelance writing career. Trottier explains 17 writing markets in depth. The writer will know which
markets he wants to tackle and what focus his writing career will have. Book
four introduces the marketing plans, a sometimes overlooked area for the writer
who thinks his writing will sell itself. Trottier challenges the writer to make
goals and stick to them.
The presentation of the information makes it easy for the writer to go right to
the information he needs for the writing stage he is in. There are tons of
exercises, questions with room to write answers, and examples to help the writer
along. The success Trottier has experienced himself in his freelance writing
career encourages the writer to believe that the strategies and information
presented actually works. Any writer of any level that needs help building their
career should invest in The Freelance Writer's Bible. It is well worth
the money and will yield results.
