Ghost: Investigating the Other Side
By Katherine Ramsland
Thomas Dunne Books
October, 2001
300 pages
Genre: Paranormal investigations (nonfiction)

While researching the disappearance of a reporter who’d been investigating vampires, Katherine Ramsland meets a man she calls Wraith in the deep in the woods late at night. Wraith spins a tale of vampirism, sadism, murder and suicide, ending with his admission that he is in fact, haunted by a former lover, vampire and partner in crime, Christian. Skeptical, Ramsland removes from Wraith’s hand the silver ring he claims was Christian’s. Leaving the woods, she hears Wraith promise that now Christian is hers. Thus begins her scientific investigation into the paranormal, culminating in Ghost: Investigating the Other Side.

Katherine Ramsland has always had an affinity for the paranormal, but never actually witnessed any true "paranormal" phenomenon. In possession of the supposedly haunted ring, however, Katherine decides this is the perfect opportunity to spend more time "ghost hunting" and attempt to determine, at least for her, if ghosts are real. As well educated woman who has obtained master’s degrees in both forensic psychology and clinical psychology and a Ph.D. in philosophy, Ramsland put her training in the scientific method and reason to the test. She sought out ghost hunting organizations, psychics and mediums seeking advice and information. Her investigation brought her to the haunted battlefields of Gettysburg, the Chelsea Hotel in New York, séances in New Orleans and even the home of the infamous Lizzie Borden. As her investigation evolves, she continues to record the strange phenomena, incredible learning experiences, and rational doubts that come to her mind, ultimately taking the reader on a wild and spooky ride to determine once and for all, if ghosts really exist.

Whether or not the reader is a believer in the supernatural, Katherine Ramsland’s Ghost: Investigating the Other Side is a fast paced, entertaining and scary read. It’s the rare book on paranormal activity in which the author has a completely open mind and is willing to share her own doubts and concerns so readily with the reader. It is clear that Katherine Ramsland is well versed in the scientific method and her investigation of the paranormal is clear and balanced. While keeping an open mind, she is willing to try various means of communication with the "other side," she seeks out scientists and psychics in addition to conducting her own research, and she never lets her personal goal of wanting to see a ghost sway her perception of any of the phenomena she witnesses. Seeking out rational explanations when possible for much of what she sees and hears, Katherine Ramsland approaches her investigation of the paranormal with caution and care to remain objective and scientific. In addition to excellent reporting of her experiences, the author includes a full bibliography, and ghost-hunting resources, including a list of paranormal organizations, psychics, investigators and the haunted places she’d investigated for the book.

Katherine Ramsland’s writing style is clear, making her explanations of the science and technology she uses easily digestible to the reader. Her self-deprecating humor makes her immediately friendly, and Ramsland’s account of her experiences is like listening to your next-door neighbor. Just one example comes when she puts on night vision goggles for the first time, while attempting to spot orbs near a covered bridge in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. She writes, "…you supposedly can see the orbs shoot right in front of you, unless as I did, you get confused and trip over a hole in the ground."

For those who already believe in the paranormal, Katherine Ramsland’s book will likely reinforce the belief that ghosts are among us. Those who are skeptical will find Ghost interesting, but probably dismiss its conclusions anyhow. But for those who truly have an open mind, Ghost: Investigating the Other Side is a well-written, well- documented, fascinating account of one woman’s search for the truth. Just make sure you keep the lights on… and don’t mind that bang you just heard. It’s just the house settling, right?
