"How to Promote Your Home Business" by John McLain is full of effective, interesting information for the small business owner interested in new and innovative publicity ideas. McLain manages, in a small space, to provide the reader with a wide array of strong publicity tips that even those strapped for cash can use.

McLain begins by discussing the basics of publicity. He gives a good basic overview of marketing techniques and how and why they work. He even manages to covey the information without sounding like a textbook, a daunting task. Particularly useful is his guide to writing a news release and where to send one.

Advertising can be expensive and McLain does well at addressing the pros and cons of advertising in his chapter on the subject. He also gives good tips on effective means of advertising and knowing how and when to advertise. He then moves on to an excellent chapter on promotions.

For anyone who's not "into" sales, McLain's chapter on The Hard Sell (Made Easy) is a great way to get started and the boost confidence of any small business person. He shows the reader some great ways to make contacts for his or her business in a comfortable and effective manner.

Finally, McLain provides a good, basic treatment of how to get your business set up on the Internet. He addresses all of the steps readers should take so that Internet users can find their businesses. He also gives some great ideas on how to promote a small business on the web.

One of the most valuable sections of the book is the Resources appendix. It includes contact information for everything from media outlets to business advice. This is especially valuable for the novice self-promoter who doesn't know where to start.

McLain writes an intelligent, valuable guide to promotion that is a great tool for any entrepreneur.
