Max Brand
by George Alex Windish

I have to admit that I'm jealous of fiction writers who are great at any genre they attempt. Max Brand is one of the writers that I'm most envious of.

Known primarily for the over 100 westerns that he wrote, Brand also penned mysteries, spy stories, historical romance and 6 volumes of poetry, as well as creating one of the best-loved medicos of all time: Dr. James Kildare.

Frederick Faust was born in Seattle, Washington in 1892, taking Max Brand as one of several pen-names in the days before World War One. He wrote quickly and seldom rewrote and managed to place dozens on stories in the pulp and the slick magazines of the day. For Detective Fiction Weekly, he created a comedy series about two police detectives, Campbell and O'Rourke, each of whom would sink to any means to outdo the other.

Brand wrote 6 mystery novels between 1935 and 1937, but many of the short stories in that genre were not collected into book form before the early 1970s. Brand, his wife and 3 children lived in Italy during the 1930s, and he was posted there after he enlisted in the US Army during World War Two. He was killed in action in 1944.

His total literary output was estimated at over 30,000,000 words.

George Alex Windish has been writing for many years, and has become a better typist, if nothing else. He has placed nearly a dozen short stories of horror and science fiction, has had a weekly column in a local Baltimore newspaper, and has written for and edited COUNTRY LINE, a small Pennsylvania magazine. He has also done ad copy and correspondence for businesses.  He has long been a fan of genre literature and truly tacky movies, as well as being a collector of vintage records.  Contact him at GeorgeWindish@aol.com
