Inside The Cover
Book Reviews
Too bad this book isn’t one you can find on a bookstore shelf; the title alone would make it jump off the shelf into the hands of many writers I know. Just think! More time! More money! Less frustration! What more could a writer want? (OK, besides writing a book that ends up as a featured selection for Kelly Ripa...) With intriguing chapters such as "Organized Writer Rules" (also known as “Rules to Work By”), "Let’s Get Organized," "Time," "Workspace," "On-Line Workspace," and "Idea to Query," and an appendix of 25 ready-to-use forms (among them "Books to Read," "Clips Index," "Daily Calendar," "Idea Grabber Form," and "Submission Tracker Form"), this book is exactly what disorganized writers need to pull themselves out of the pit of disorganization they have fallen into. It’s organized for day-to-day use as an ongoing process - if you don’t finish organizing a certain area today, you can go back to it next week on the same day! She has you begin by deciding what your personality type is and how it affects your writing organization. Then, she shows you how to work with your personal style instead of feeling guilty that you can’t do it the way So-and-so does it. Goody, no more guilt! Here’s the part of the book that is worth every red cent you paid for it - the "Master List!" Making this up (choosing from her list of categories or using your own) will save you many hours of hunting for a clipping or article, and it will reduce the stacks of paper all over your office, too. (I know, from my mouth to God’s ear...) She even includes sample lists to make it easier to come up with your own. A nice side value to an e-book is the links that can be placed in it. Hood’s book includes (among others) links to office supply stores, HTML calendar generators, an on-line reminder service, and sites that explain the effect of color, ergonomic guidelines, inexpensive storage ideas, and how to organize your e-mail. Very handy! You can add to the book’s value by signing up for Hood’s e-newsletter, Writer-Reminders (“The weekly ezine with a road map for sidetracked writers”). Just send a blank e-mail to Writer-Reminders-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and you’ll receive a weekly e-mail with brief articles about organization, daily checklists you can print out and post in your office, and a list of web sites where you can access marketing information. Between the book and the newsletter, you’ll be organized in no time (and if you aren’t, it’s not Hood’s fault!). Betty Winslow is a staff writer for Absolute Write and moderates one of their BBs.
