Fiction

See Jane Gregg. Jane’s a very busy woman. A successful twenty eight year old living in New York City, she’s an Assistant Editor for Posh Publishing. Charged with editing the tell-all autobiography of her high school nemesis turned famous actress, Natasha Nutley, Jane hopes her work on Natasha’s well-received memoir will earn her that well deserved promotion to Associate Editor. While trying to do her job and still maintain her dislike for "Gnat," as Jane always not-so-affectionately referred to her, Jane’s also knee deep in a peach bridesmaid’s dress with matching shoes, an annoyingly perfect cousin about to get married, and the hyper perky maid of honor from hell. The only thing making this scenario worse, is that Jane’s dateless for the wedding.

Enter Eloise and Amanda, Jane’s two best friends. Not one to let a dateless friend down, Amanda sets up one blind date after another for Jane. As she power dates her way through New York, editing and bridal shower planning as she goes, Jane’s summer shapes up into more than she bargained for, both personally and professionally. With wit and a wink, Melissa Senate has created an endearing contemporary heroine for modern readers savvy enough to want realistic stories that speak to their lives, fears and dreams.

Melissa Senate’s See Jane Date is sharp and well-written. Keeping her prose light and humorous, Senate still achieves more than simply scratching the surface of women’s friendships, and their relationships with their families and themselves. Senate intimately involves the reader in the life of Jane Gregg – the language, the tone, and the plot are so carefully and tightly constructed, the reader is free to laugh and cry with Jane. By turns funny and touching, especially during Jane’s trips down memory lane to her childhood, See Jane Date is genuinely enjoyable. Senate’s skill at tugging the threads of high school insecurity that still weave their way into Jane’s life will echo resoundingly through the mind and memory of many readers. With her thumb squarely on the pulse of young urban professional women, Senate has penned an engaging novel of one young woman’s quest for professional and personal fulfillment, with a little romance thrown in for good measure. For readers who enjoy living vicariously through the young, hip and urban single woman, See Jane Date is a first-rate read.
