The Summer Of Us

Holly Chamberlin (Living Single) scores another hit with her charming character study of three women sharing a house for the summer. A great beach read, The Summer of Us follows Gincy, Danielle, and Clare as each is on the cusp of thirty and each looking for something different as they head into the next stage of their lives.

The three women are initially strangers who meet at a gathering for people who are looking for housemates for the summer rental season on Martha’s Vineyard. They each arrive toward the end of the gathering and are then stuck with each other for the summer. They are very different from each other, but decide to take the leap.

Gincy was raised in small town New Hampshire and is from a poor background. She avoids any entanglements that are too personal, running from anything that even smells of commitment. So her summer romance with an office mate who is also a single dad is, for her, a simultaneous source of joy and fear. Danielle loves designer clothing and professional men. She’s close with her Jewish family, and is on the hunt for a husband who will fit her criteria: well-off, Jewish, and handsome. Clare is already engaged to her well-off but controlling lawyer boyfriend of ten years, but is beginning to have second thoughts.

Chamberlin’s characters are well-drawn, going beyond any hint of stereotyping and becoming real people who could be any woman’s office mate or girlfriend. Each story is told from the point of view of one of the characters, providing insight into the mind of each woman. She avoids the stumbling block of cardboard, stereotypical characters, giving each woman her own clear, vibrant personality. The reader gets drawn into the life of each woman and is invited to take a peek behind-the-scenes, getting a sense of who they are and why.

While navigating the twist and turns of dating, Danielle, Gincy, and Clare are able to grab hold of their destinies and discover what they really want. Chamberlin provides the reader with a satisfying, though not predictable, ending. Her latest work is a great read and makes a fine addition to any beach bag and romance library.

Their adventures together provide her with great ideas for writing and a joyous life.
