Inside
the Cover Book Reviews
I’ve never listened to an audiobook before.
It felt lazy; if I purport to be a writer, oughtn’t I take the time to
actually... read? But as I got into
the groove, it started to feel more like a refreshing change of pace rather than
a disloyal act. This audiobook is a phenomenal “workshop in a box” for
fiction writers. Containing six
cassettes, it’s nine hours of insight and help for writers. It’s slanted slightly towards novelists rather than short
story writers, and is an in-depth look at the writer’s life.
You won’t just learn “how to write” here—you’ll learn “how to
be a writer.” Semantics?
Not exactly. Told primarily in first-person anecdotes, the audiobook
covers topics such as pen names, collaboration, rejection, the solitude of
writing, and writer’s block. You’ll
also get craft advice, such as “don’t start at the beginning”—throw your
reader right into the middle of the action and then go back and explain how the
characters got there. You’ll hear
about how to make transitions without boring readers with every step your
character takes, and you’ll read Block’s opinions about writing in the first
person. Mr. Block was a fiction columnist for Writer’s Digest
magazine for 14 years, starting in 1976. This
book is a collection of his columns, and has remained in print since 1981.
It’s full of first-person anecdotes and examples from Block’s own
books—by the way, there are now more than 50 of them published—and explains
what Block has done in his own writing career and how you can apply that to your
writing. The author has a dry wit, but his verbal delivery lacks the comedic punch that appears on the printed page. Nonetheless, his voice is “listenable,” and the audiobook is well worth its price. It contains a wealth of tips and good old-fashioned sense from a lifelong writer.
