Inside The Cover
Book Reviews
Finally, another author to add to my can’t-put-it-down-’til-it’s-done list. Until now, Charles de Lint has been the only writer I literally read in one sitting... Elaine Corvidae has changed that for me! Luckily I had company this weekend, and they chased the baby while I read this fantastic novel cover to cover. Mina Cole is a factory slave, and unbeknownst to her, Unseelie. Half human, half fae, Mina was raised in an orphanage and has no training in her dark power. Until she meets Duncan DiRahn, Mina doesn’t even know others like her exist. Mina is soon introduced to a myriad of characters; from the down to earth Bryan to Fox, an aristocratic young woman who escapes from home to future gaze in a Cat’s Cradle. Together they battle the Seelie Court, a half-human aristocracy out to eliminate any and all Fae power save their own. The lines between good and evil are as vague as the bloodlines of these Fae powers. Elaine Corvidae has created some of the most amazing characters I’ve met in a long time. The dialogue is absolutely true to life; reading this out loud, it sounds like things real people would actually say. Magic descriptions sometimes turn comical with over-the-top special effects, but Corvidae’s characters have internalized their magics and are of a more subtle variety. I enjoyed watching Mina struggle with her newfound power; her internal battles are written with fantastic insight to the human soul. Mina’s battle with her fae power is a mirror for anyone who has struggled to discover her own inner strength. Other characters, like Duncan DiRahn, become all the more believable for their fatal flaws, which lead to more than a few good plot twists. Winter’s Orphans was released October 22, and should be in bookstores, and on bestseller lists, soon! Buy as a paperback or as an e-book here. Contact Shelley Hannah at shlenterprises@yahoo.ca.
