The Screenwriter's Dictionary

bulletSpec script- A script that was not commissioned. Something you wrote with the hope that someone will buy it in the future. (On "speculation.")
bulletLogline- A very brief "teaser" synopsis of your script. 1-3 sentences, similar to what you'd find in the TV Guide.
bulletQuery- A one-page letter sent to producers and/or agents meant to entice them to read your work. Includes short synopsis and relevant author information.
bulletPitch meeting- Face-to-face or phone 'interview' wherein you have a few minutes to describe your script and convince someone to buy it.
bulletWork-for-hire- Opposite of spec script. A work you're being commissioned to write; the rights will most likely belong to the studio/producer when you're done.
bulletRelease form- Non-agented writers are often asked to sign a contract that releases the producer/agent from responsibility for developing material similar to yours. A sample contract is linked to this site.
bullet3 Act Structure- Typical screenplay structure involves 3 major "beats"-- read Syd Field or Robert McKee's books to learn about it.
bulletCharacter Arc- the change a character goes through throughout the script. Normally around the climax, your character must have a different attitude than in the beginning.
bulletTreatment- A blow-by-blow synopsis of your script. Anywhere from 3-40 pages, depending on the detail desired. Can be more like an outline, or it may detail every action in the script (just omitting dialogue.)
bulletBrads- Those pesky little brass fasteners that you can't find anywhere.  (Okay, that's not an official definition.)  Use 1 ¼" to to bind under 110 pages, and 1 ½ for 110-125 pages.
