Something's Gotta Give
A review by Doc & The Schmo

"Lots of laughs, even when it turns serious... even when it turns sad."

Something’s Gotta Give, written and directed by Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride, The Parent Trap) offers up a romantic comedy about love and heartbreak. Harry Langer (played by Jack Nicholson) is a famous bachelor incapable of monogamy until he is forced to rest at the home of Erica Barry (Diane Keaton) after a life-altering heart attack.

I gotta say, Doc, this isn’t the kinda flick I’d run to from the garage but my wife insisted and hey, it’s got Jack! So I went… Boy was I glad. I ain’t into that lovey dovey stuff, but it ain’t all about that, as I noticed. I was rollin’ in the aisles with the jokes they kept on spewing.

Unfortunately, most romantic comedies fail to carry the laughs once the plot requires a turn to the more serious, but Meyers’ screenplay keeps up the laughs even when her characters reach rock bottom. There's lots of laughs, even when it turns serious... even when it turns sad. A great portion of the kudos can go to splendid acting by Nicholson and especially Keaton, who perhaps shows us the best display of heartbreak in modern cinema. But also Keanu Reeves as the doctor in love with Keaton’s character and Frances McDormand as her sister put in solid supporting performances.

Keanu is definitely gonna make people forget all about Neo and all the Matrixes when they see this one. The dude’s developed a lot and the move from a god-like Neo in the Matrix to a doctor – the only guys around with god complexes – gets a thumbs up from me. Another thumb or two definitely cranks up for Amanda Peet – we-hey!

The visual appeal most certainly goes further than Ms. Peet. The settings in New York, Paris and especially the Hamptons take one on a visual voyage from the burden of the daily grind. Something’s Gotta Give is a film full of quality that is without boundaries, from the solid screenwriting to the stellar thespians and on to the pristine set designs, all in a well-paced package. It is without doubt, the best romantic comedy of the last few years and Academy Award nominations may be in the air come award time.

I gotta agree on those Oscars. It’s all good. It kept me in my seat and Jack definitely is the man, showing us that even womanizers can fall in the big ‘L.’ When you see big Jack crying on the screen like he did, you know he’s diggin’ deep down, and Ms. Keaton goes even further, but that you gotta see for yourself. Ain’t no doubt that this one’s worth seeing for every schmo out there with a beatin’ heart and a funny-bone.

Rating: **** (out of 5 *s)

As often as they can, the Schmo, in his grease-pit garage, and Doc, in his Ivy-league den, rant or rave over the phone about the latest movie release. It's all scripted here - an unlikely duo talking about the highs and lows of the film from positions on high and down low.  You can reach Doc at doc@filmfrenzy.org and The Schmo at schmo@filmfrenzy.org
