The latest New Yorker issue is one of their special double fiction issues, and even if you're not a great NY fan or subscriber it is well worth reading.

There's an Annie Proulx short story called Tits Up In a Ditch. Proulx always makes me want to stick my head in the nearest oven, and this piece is no exception. It is a real achievement, though--tender and absolutely furious on behalf of her characters.

There is a well chosen series of short pieces on faith and doubt here--one by a priest named Uwen Akpen stood out.

Mary Gaitskill had a long, rambling story about an Ethiopan adoption almost gone wrong. I have always liked Gaitskill's stuff, but this wasn't particularly successful.

All this and an entertainingly bitchy review of the Sex and the City movie by Anthony Lane.
