I recently finished a memoir "The Man on Mao's Right" by Ji Chaozuh, a translator for Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, the two main founders of the Chinese Revolution. The author of this memoir was an insider right from the beginning, and his story spans practically the whole history of modern China, making a fascinating and painless way to go in depth into the workings of that country through its troubled eras, such as the Korean war and the Cultural Revolution. The book is full of intrigue and well written.

You can read a full review at my blog, or rather an essay about the book at my blog. Here's the permalink:

Interesting. I haven't read that one, but if anyone's interested in the same sort of memoir from a woman's perspective, try Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China. It's an account of three generations of Chinese women living through some of the most difficult modern years in China, including the Cultural Revolution. Fascinating stuff.
