I just had occasion to mention Nigerian writer Amos Tutuola in a thread in the Writing for Kids forum, and it's prompted me to wonder if anyone else here has read his stuff. His two most famous works are The Palm-Wine Drinkard and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. They are "novels", I guess, technically, and not children's stories, but they are more like magic-realism tall tales, based on stories Tutuola learned as a child, and embellished with an extraordinary narrative sense that had to come from the marrow of his bones. Hypnotic, scary and funny at the same time, and for me, a wonderful reading experience. Think of an African Garcia Marquez and you might get close to what Tutuola's works are like. I'd recommend him highly, for anyone who wants to try something off the beaten track.
