Hi everyone,

Please enjoy my review of Stay Close by Harlan Coben.

Thanks,

Ethan

This is the first book I read from Harlan Coben, but definitely will not be the last. The story opens with Ray Levine, a down on his luck fake paparazzi, who is mugged. It seems the perpetrator is after Ray’s camera. But it fact they’re after a photograph Ray has taken. A photograph of a place that has haunted Ray for seventeen years and of a man who had recently disappeared.

Megan, a suburban soccer mom, longs for her sizzling past, from which she ran away seventeen years ago. Tempted to return to it for just a foretaste, she is rapidly dragged into a web of lies, which grow by the second as she deceives her loving husband. Ray and Megan have still some unfinished business, some of which involve the police.

Detective Broom cannot get over an old case of a missing person, and dedicates his entire being into investigating the recent disappearance. It coincidentally happened on February 18, like seventeen years ago. Detective Broom begins to think there is a pattern that connects the two events.

The writing of Stay Close is well-carved and easy to read and to follow. Mr. Coben keeps the reader guessing as he unfolds this story full of twists and turns and overflowing with suspense. A few things here and there seem to make no sense on their own, but when looked in their entirety, like pieces of a puzzle, they all interlock into place. This is not a simple whodunit story, but characters come alive through their fears, hopes and disappointments.

Mr. Coben takes the reader through a long journey into their deepest fears and recesses. What if the ghosts of our past came to haunt us? Can we play with fire and not get burned? How much of who we are is determined by our past? Can we ever forgive our loved ones and ourselves for the sins of our past?

The reader would be yearning to know what exactly happened in that park seventeen years ago and why is it still tormenting Ray and Megan. Who is responsible for these disappearances? Will Detective Broom be able to put all the pieces together, and how will this story affect the lives of Ray and Megan?
