Hi everyone,
Please enjoy my review of Calico Joe by John Grisham.
Thanks,
Ethan
Calico Joe is a story about baseball, but also about regrets, disappointments, and broken hearts and lives. It’s a tale of reconciliation, closure, and the power of forgiveness.
Eleven-year-old Paul Tracy, the son of a Mets pitcher, Warren Tracy, loves baseball. He has a dysfunctional relationship with his estranged father, but he adores Joe Castle, famously known as Calico Joe, a rookie hitter for the Cubs and Paul’s hero. As fate has it, the Mets are facing the Cubs and hard-throwing Warren Tracy is staring at Calico Joe.
Baseball fans will like the vivid descriptions of the game, the actions, the players. All readers will love the fast pace, the simple and precise language, the few brush strokes that create great characters in this short novel. There are moments of sadness and bitterness, and tear-jerking scenes. There are pages that make you wonder how much of our lives we waste chasing success and end up neglecting our loved ones.
Will Warren Tracy for once in his life admit the truth and accept responsibility for that fateful fastball he threw thirty years ago? Will Paul be able to forgive his father? Will Calico Joe finally find closure in his life?
