For mine, I kept it simple. I was going to use my full, real name, but there were a few problems with it. For one, I normally go by my first and the first of my two middle names hyphenated, which is long in itself. Then my real last name is a tongue twister and since there are only a few of us in the province with that particular last name, it's easy to find me and members of my family. It wouldn't work. My husband and I like our privacy and would prefer that people contact me via my websites or Facebook page instead of here at the house somehow.

So I went with using the initials of my first name (V) and my first middle name (J) and then used an elongated version of my great grandmother's first name (Alice) to honor her. She was a bookworm like me, and according to my mother, I look and act a lot like she did.

That's how I came up with V.J. Allison for a nom de plume, and I love it.

One of my pickier friends pointed out it reminds her daughter of some of the greats in the writing world. I've been told it's so easy to pronounce and remember because Allison is such a common name... Not exactly as a surname, but it works for me. :D It's a lot easier to pronounce and spell over my real last name too.

I use my Japanese names. "Lane" is what I thought my SOs middle name was; it wasn't, but I decided to keep it anyways.

About the only recommendation I've seen is to keep the names short, or at the least easy on the eyes/tongue.

DancingMaenid, did you ever come up with a pen name?

Sort of! I really wanted to use Sawyer as a first name. Finding a surname to go with it has been a little more tricky, but right now I'm thinking of Sawyer Barns. Though, I welcome opinions on that. I'm still having some trouble deciding on something that I'm 100% happy with, though that's mostly because I'm trying to avoid a name that's too common, or already heavily associated with someone else. But I might be too picky in that regard.

(And don't worry about hijacking the thread. I'm glad for more pen name discussion!)

Funny, I considered Sawyer once, too. Sawyer Beck. It really does sound like a name that needs a B-surname, doesn't it?

I'm having a hell of a time selecting my pseudonym. I've got it narrowed down to three: Angela Finch, Camren Hyde, or J. D. Hyde. Can't decide between the feminine name, the unisex name, and the ever-popular initials + surname. Sigh.

I wish I could just go by Viridian.

Hiding in this box I made.
J.D. Veridian has a nice sound.

I just made up my pen names by messing around with baby name sites till I found something I liked.

Although I'm no longer planning to use it, I went with [Unusual First Name] [Common Last Name], which I think is a good way to come up with something reasonably memorable, but also fairly plausible.

Oh I have two pen names: M.N Thorne sounds very manly despite me being a woman. My second pen name is Dona Diabla because it means Devil woman in Spanish.

I always heard to get your porn star name, you use your first pet and the street you grew up on.
Mine would be Forget-it Virginia (Ave). Not the best porn star or pen name.

Hmmmm.... "Poochie Mound"...

I think I like it...

;)

I've seen some 'Starshine Moonflower Amazon Warrior Princess' author names that are hard for readers to remember.

If I saw a name that goofy and off the wall, I'd probably remember it. Taking them seriously is another matter of course.

So I'm looking for a second pen name. I'm thinking of doing some sort of variation on my primary pen name "Lizzie Brooks".

Possible first names: Liz, Izzy, Beth, and Eliza.

Possible last names: Rivers, Rill, Rousseau (a play on ruisseau, the French word for brook), and Strom (German for brook, but may be confused with "storm").

Eliza Strom and Eliza Rill are the least common names on Twitter and in the White Pages, but Eliza sounds a bit stuffy to me.

I like the way Liz Rivers sounds, but there are a bunch of them on Twitter already. Same with Izzy Rivers and Beth Rousseau.

Any names that you especially like? Any that make you cringe? Help, please!

"Izzy Rousseau" sounds both snazzy and old-fashioned.

I think "Eliza Strom" sounds good, but agree that Storm would be a common misspelling. I know I'd make the mistake.

How about "Elise Rivers" or "Liese Rousseau"?

Hey first post here

I chose mine as sort of a choke but then found reasons to like it.
I've got a unique first name but for some reason people always forget it. I've been called Dunstan on many occasions because it sort of sounds like my name. I wasn't even sure it was a real name until I looked it up. Craig was the name of my
Favorite Uncle.

Together they sounded good to be but my wife pointed out it also sounds like Daniel Craig. I'm hoping for that to work in my advantage.

Hmmm not sure why that post got mangled. Missing words and a change in font size? I'm posting from my phone. Is that normal?

Do you have his startling blue eyes and dead-man stare? Because, if you do, that may help more... just kidding. ;)

I like Dunstan Craig... it is a good, strong name. Sounds legit enough, but still unique enough to stand out. What genre are you writing in?

I haven't entirely figured that out yet. I'm working on 3 levels at once.

I write what I call quickies which are about 500-1000 words and they cover just about anything. I usually write them on twitter at the suggestions of followers. It's helping me build a bit of base and following.

I'm also writing a series of short stories that have a sort of sci-fi vibe to them.

Lastly I'm working on a novel that's something like and erotic thriller. It's mostly male on male with dominance and cross dressing themes. A little heavier into the fetish stuff.

I'm new to all this still. I've been writing for years but this is my first go at this type of subject matter.

There used to be a thread somewhere about what genre others would guess your pen name suited...

Dunstan Craig, to me, sounds more like a name suited to historical intrigue/mystery or cop/spy thrillers. But, that may be because of the Daniel Craig connection.

I can kind of see Dunstan working for sic-fi, but Craig seems better fitted as a first name in that genre.

So here's a follow up question. Should I create multiple names right from the start or focus on gaining a following first?

Thanks, for your input, Elly! I haven't settled on a name yet, but I won't actually need one for a while yet. I knew it would take me a while to decide, though, so I wanted to find some options.

Speaking of common misspellings....

I'm still struggling a little bit with my pen name. I liked the idea of Sawyer Barnes, but when I google that, I get a ton of results from the Barnes and Noble site for various editions of Tom Sawyer, so I was concerned that my pen name would end up buried under all that.

Sawyer Barns has very few search results, which I like. But I worry that spelling the last name that way will look odd or invite misspellings.

What do you guys think?
