This forum wouldn't hold them all. I live in the hills, where there are nothing but legends. But, just to start, you know...
There's the story of BearTown. BearTown (sometimes called Bear Mountain) was supposedly the town where a brother and sister took refuge because they were married. They had several children, who populated the town--all of whom were mentally challenged in some way. Now, BearTown does exist, right here in good ol' WV. But, it isn't full of half-baked dullards. There is one very weird and strange family (a rather large family, at that) who people claim are the relatives of the original brother and sister. It's good fun to tell the kids not to go to BearTown or the inbreeds might kill them. Especially after "Wrong Turn" came out (and supposedly, that film was based on a loose version of this story).
There's another that was actually recorded in a collection type book of Appalachian Legends. The story is of a man who picks up a young lady on the road. She tells him her date/boyfriend was to pick her up, but never came for her. Guy sees the girl shivering, gives her his coat. He takes her home, she goes inside after thanking him. He goes back several days later to get his coat, but an old woman comes to the door. He tells of the girl he picked up, and she takes him out back, to their family cemetery (a lot of people around here still maintain and use their old family graveyards), and explains her daughter was hit by a car and killed ten years before while waiting on the bridge for her boyfriend. She shows him the gravestone, and his jacket is hanging over the stone.
The road I live on is an old mining community from before the WV coal mine wars. There is a graveyard full of little kids up on top of the mountain (I've been to it. Creepy stuff!). Some say you can hear kids laughing at night, but I never have. The kids in the graveyard were killed during a typhoid epidemic that hit the mining camp. Nothing really creepy about the story, but when you see twenty or more graves over a hundred years old, and they're all children but two... the imagination goes wild.
I'm not a skeptic and I won't say none of them are true cause, well, I dunno. But these are just some of what I grew up hearing. And tons more on top of that. Including a warped, WV version of Lilith (you've all heard of the supposed biblical Lilith, right?), the baby stealer.
