Does anyone know who the acquisitions editor for SF/Fantasy is at TOR? I've Googled, Yahooed, hunted through blogs, and I can't put a name with the title. I don't want to use the dreaded...Dear Editor...how crappy is that?

He won't take it personally. Seriously. Just query.

Or call the front office and ask.

Don't worry about it. Just follow the Guidelines, and make sure that SF Acquisitions is very very clearly visible on the envelope.

You might find this old AW thread worth looking at too.

Tor has bought approximately ten projects from their slush pile in the history of the imprint, last I heard. And, they get approximately a billion slush queries a months

If you want to find an editor, find books kind of like yours on the bookshelf, and see who their editors and agetns are. Look in the acknowledgements page. You'll find 'em.

I wish it were me :p I wanna be an editor (or agent, either is fine by me) and editing SF would be the ultimate dream come true >__<

I'm graduating in december if anyone wants me (hinthint ;) )

I second the advice to go for an agent.

Thump, if you're serious, look into an internship. It's a good way to get both feet in the door. Most publishers have 'em and Tor's is especially well thought of.

Its a husband and wife team - hayden something. They have a blog - I'll see if I can find a link.

No, the SF acquistions editor at Tor is not the Nielsen Haydens. It really isn't.

PNH is the head of the SF division. TNH now works at Federated Media.

Follow the guidelines; really. I am speaking wisdom here.

When an unsolicited ms. comes in, an editorial asst. logs it, looks at the front to see where it goes, and it's distributed. It's generally not going to go right to the acquisitions editor; usually someone does a general perusal and QA check, first.

Interesting - I don't doubt you for a moment. Wonder how many orphans they left behind when they moved?

Errr . . . .they haven't moved. There are no orphans. TNH has a new job, but she's been consulting at Tor for a while; PNH still heads SF. And edits. Won the Editor Hugo this year. Also has created some of the best SF anthologies, ever.

If you want to know who is buying things at what imprint, sign up for Publisher's Lunch. They have a free version that's still very informative.

There are many different kinds of "editor" at different imprints, and it is important to send things to the right one. If you want to find an editor or an agent, go to your bookshelf at the books that are kind of like your in style and demographic, and read the acknowledgments page. Targeting an "acquisitions editor" is not nearly as useful as targeting "the editor who bought the project by that other new-ish author who has kind of the same tone/sense of humor as me."

Finding an agent first is a good idea, if you can swing it.

Be sure to check any potential agents with Writer Beware, Preditors and Editors, and our own Bewares and Background check board. Just because someone is listed as okay once, doesn't mean that status stays the same throughout all time. Things change, after all. Evidence gathers.

About a year ago, I querried TOR (both the regular and the paranormal divisions), and I was told that they no longer take unsolicited ms. Unless someone else knows differently, I'd say you need an agent. (But, for your sake, I sure hope I'm wrong!!)

Tor has a number of editors for different lines. For example, if you write paranormal romance, there is a separate set of editors. Thus, I would address it the way the FAQ says unless a specific editor has already requested it.

Here's a list of editors at Tor.
It's in my notes, but what's NOT in my notes is how old this list is, or where I found it.
In other words, caveat lector.

Claire Eddy
Moshe Feder
James Frenkel
Anna Genoese
Liz Gorinsky
Robert Gleason
David G. Hartwell
Harriet McDougal
Beth Meacham
Patrick Nielsen Hayden
Teresa Nielsen Hayden
Eric Raab
Paul Stevens

I was invited to submit to them over two and a half years ago (when TNH still was there full time) and haven't heard a peep. Be prepared to be patient.

It's pretty much the same situation at Baen.
Having an agent cuts through the queue more quickly, but I'm impressed that both houses even make the attempt.
